Posted this to FB last night - trying to wake the Muse by whispering a triolet in her ear. Five people liked it, the usual New Formalist suspects.
Prior to retiring, the first three weeks of August was the time squeezed between 'Staff Development Week' and A level results day when we could have a family holiday. Consequently I have never been at home at this time for the past twenty years. I wrote this today as an apology to our garden; I discovered this year while I was at at home, that it just went on flowering anyway, whether we were there or not.
Flowers in August
Unseen the flowers of August bloomed.
Through all the summers we sought the sun
we missed our garden’s glory. Doomed
astilbes flourished, then were gone,
unseen the flowers of August bloomed.
Returning, cursed the uncut lawn -
unseen the flowers of August bloomed
through all the summers we sought the sun.
